You may have limited mobility or function if you’ve undergone surgery or experienced an injury. That’s where physical therapy comes in. Seeing a physical therapist can help increase your mobility and help you heal quicker. But if you’ve never gone to physical therapy before, you may be wondering what to expect. Here’s what to expect at your physical therapy appointment.
The Evaluation
Your first physical therapy appointment will be an initial evaluation. A physical therapist will learn about your injury, level of function before the injury, and how your injury affects your life. Then, they’ll take measurements of your condition to develop a personalized treatment plan. You must be honest with your physical therapist and address any concerns you have. Being upfront will help both of you with the rehab process!
How to Prepare for Your First Physical Therapy Appointment
Your physical therapist will have many questions for you at your first appointment. For this reason, it’s helpful to prepare. You may even want to write things down so you don’t forget and leave any important information out. Here are some questions to consider as you’re preparing:
- What specific surgery or injury did you experience?
- When did it occur?
- Are you noticing any pain?
- How often does the pain occur?
- What is your pain level on a scale of 1-10?
- What actions make your symptoms better or worse?
- What medications are you taking, and for how long?
Wear Comfortable Clothing
Physical therapy uses movement to help the body heal. For that reason, wear comfortable clothes that you can move in. Workout or lounge clothes are usually best – leggings, sweatpants, loose-fitting t-shirts, or gym shorts.
